A weird movie. It's also surprisingly beautiful, sweet, and hilarious. Swiss Army Man tells the story about man named Hank played by Paul Dano, who stranded on a deserted island and about to kill himself, until he notices a corpse washed up on the beach and realise this corpse can talk and has a myriad of supernatural abilities to help him ride away from the island like a jet ski with fart. Yes fart!
First of all, from just the first 5 minutes you'll notice that this is not your normal comedy movie, this is a lot more weird than most (if not all) comedy movies nowadays. It's the story of a man who gets stranded on an island and before killing himself he sees a man in the shore, he then proceeds to "rescue" him and a lot of stuff goes down.
Some people just don't get it. Everything about this movie is just crazy beyond limit plot and extremely laughable moments that are so silly and in a lot of ways dirty. Adventures of two guys are going over everything you can imagine and what you hoped to see. Surreal experiences of dead guy and living one make you question everything, from what is going on to what is going to happen that will left you speechless. It bends your imagination in most unusual ways and has some of the most ridiculous scenes that you will ever see and it makes this movie unique in some way because you will be grossed, laughing, amazed and not believe in the same moment which you don't get to feel in the movies so often. Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe are superbly funny and played their roles perfectly. Also, Mary Elizabeth Winstead giving good performance, even with short duration she's still good.
It's a good movie if you think about it. Yes, it's weird (since it's a comedy) but most of it has deep meaning in it like how the farts represent freedom. I mean farting is like one example of simple things that we are ashamed of. Just like love, Hank shows us that just like most of us he is ashamed of the fact the he wants love, that he is alone and feels loneliness. It's like you are not allowed to tell people that because you feel it will push them away (just like farting). The film explores these walls we build up that keeps us away from a connection as metaphor.
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert succesful to explores and experiments with the stranger themes in film, and it exposes and accelerates what our imagination is capable of as artists even with soundtrack. As film makers and film lovers, it brings out raw and deep emotions and thoughts within us if you let it with open minded. Gosh, I can't wait to see Duo Daniels next project!
